From the desk of Global Links Group — Guiding you through evolving travel policies with clarity and confidence.
As global travel patterns shift and governments refine visa policies, it’s vital for our clients, whether planning a vacation, business trip, or family visit, to stay one step ahead. A recent update by the U.S. Department of State has expanded requirements that may impact travelers from several countries, including many in Africa.
What’s Changing?
Under a new pilot initiative listed on Travel.State.Gov, the United States now requires certain visa applicants from select countries to post a refundable cash bond when applying for B-1 (business) or B-2 (tourism) visas.
These bonds, ranging from $5,000 up to $15,000, are not travel fees, nor guarantees of approval. They act as a compliance assurance: if you meet all visa conditions and depart the U.S. on time, the bond is refunded.
Which Countries Are Affected?
As of early 2026, the State Department’s list includes dozens of nations whose citizens must post visa bonds. Among them:
🇳🇬 Nigeria
🇲🇼 Malawi
🇿🇲 Zambia
🇸🇹 São Tomé & Príncipe
🇹🇿 Tanzania
🇬🇲 The Gambia
🇧🇼 Botswana
🇬🇳 Guinea & Guinea-Bissau
…and more.
This policy applies when nationals of these countries are otherwise eligible for a U.S. visa, meaning if a visa is denied, the bond isn’t retained by the government.
Why Is This Happening?
According to U.S. authorities, the bond programme is designed to reduce overstays, cases where visitors remain in the country beyond their visa terms. Overstay data plays a key role in identifying which travellers are subject to these requirements.
What Travellers Should Know
Bond is refundable — if you comply with visa terms and leave on time, you get your money back.
Payment only through Pay.gov — the U.S. Treasury’s official platform; never use third-party sites.
Form I-352 required — your consular officer will direct you when to submit this.
Designated U.S. entry/exit points may apply once approved.
